On the Forefront: Prophylactic laser disk ablation in dogs at Oklahoma State University

Adequate analgesic treatment of both acute perioperative pain and chronic pain in dogs is recognized by the veterinary profession and the general public as imperative to appropriate and humane medical care.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Clinical Exposures: Preovulatory stasis and dystocia in oviparous lizards

A 2-year-old intact female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented for evaluation of weakness and anorexia.

Clinical Exposures: Incidental finding of a peritoneopericardial hernia in a cat

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus: Not an Automatic Death Sentence
By Franny Syufy, About.com

A positive result from a Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) test can have a devastating effect to a cat owner. Innumerable questions roil through the mind: How could my cat have FIV? What can I do? How long does he have? I thought he had been vaccinated against FIV. Isn't there some miracle medication he can take?
I can attest to this mental turmoil; my cat Shannon, who shared my life… Continue

Brucellosis in sub-Saharan Africa: epidemiology, control and impact

Abstract

Brucellosis is an important disease among livestock and people in sub-Saharan Africa. In general, the incidence is the highest in pastoral production systems and decreases as herd size and size of landholding decreases. The prevalence of risk factors for infections are best understood for bovine brucellosis and to a lesser extent for ovine and caprine brucellosis. The occurrence and epidemiology of brucellosis in pigs is poorly understood. This species bias is also reflected in control… Continue

Enter the Invite-a-Vet contest and promote your expertise, services or company

Invite your friends, colleagues and peers, and get featured on Top Invite-a-Vet!

Enter the Invite-a-Vet! monthly contest of the Sub-Saharan Veterinary Science forum. This contest is designed to be a fun way to encourage all members to invite their friends and colleagues to join our community and be rewarded with free promotion for their profile, company, product or service.

Here's how it works:
1) Each month, we encourage you to send out as many new invites using the "Invite" tab on the main toolbar as you can.
2) At the end of each month, we will calculate the number of new members that joined as a result of your invite.
3) On the 1st of the following month, we will place a featured link in the Invite-a-Vet box on the main page to the top invitor's company website.

This is a great way to expand your network on the vet forum and gain free promotion for you company at the same time!

Here are some tips for effective invitations:
1) Always use the "Invite" feature on the vet forum to send out your invites. This is how we will track your performance.
2) Personalise your invitation message. This will likely produce more conversion of invitations to actual new members joining.
3) Use the import features to pull in contacts from Outlook and other email programs to streamline your invite process.

Have fun inviting and good luck to all!

Veterinary research

In vitro evaluation of differences in phase 1 metabolism of ketamine and other analgesics among humans, horses, and dogs.

Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Enzymes of the CYP 3A4 family and orthologs of CYP 2C9 were involved in ketamine metabolism in horses, dogs, and humans. Methadone and xylazine inhibited in vitro metabolism of ketamine. Therefore, higher concentrations and diminished clearance of ketamine may cause adverse effects when administered concurrently with other analgesics. PMID: 19496669 [PubMed - in process] (Source: American Journal of Veterinary Research)

Comparison of equine tendon-, muscle-, and bone marrow-derived cells cultured on tendon matrix.

Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Tendon- and muscle-derived cells yielded greater cell culture numbers in shorter time and, on a per-cell basis, had comparable biosynthetic assays to bone marrow-derived cells. More in vitro experiments with higher numbers may determine whether tendon-derived cells are a useful resource for tendon healing. PMID: 19496665 [PubMed - in process] (Source: American Journal of Veterinary Research)

Evaluation of an immunoassay for determination of haptoglobin concentration in various biological specimens from swine.

Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-The 1-step TR-IFM assay accurately quantified haptoglobin concentrations in serum, saliva, and meat juice samples from swine and may be useful in laboratory and meat inspection settings. PMID: 19496656 [PubMed - in process] (Source: American Journal of Veterinary Research)
